A Love for Missions Abroad (ALMA)

ALMA was founded by our very own Michael Oswald, CRNA, and his wife Teresa after they observed a critical lack of access to quality medical care in rural Guatemalan communities. Motivated to make a tangible difference, they created an organization dedicated to delivering the highest standard of medical and surgical care to those with limited resources.

A central pillar of ALMA’s mission is bringing specialized surgical teams to the department of Sololá. These missions not only provide life-changing procedures but also focus on bilateral training—facilitating valuable knowledge exchange between visiting U.S. medical professionals and local Guatemalan physicians and nurses. This collaborative model builds lasting capacity and strengthens healthcare in the region for years to come.

The Pierce Family Scholarship

Started by Sarah Pierce CRNA and her family, this scholarship helps Kootenai Health employees with continuing education and training costs as they further their skills to enhance patient care and clinical excellence.

Sarah began her career 25 years ago at Kootenai Health and believes this scholarship is a meaningful way to pay it forward and honor employees who are devoted to advancing their careers and strengthening patient care.

Difficult Airway Program

This program was initiated by Sarah Pierce CRNA. It outlines the development and implementation of a Difficult Airway Response Team aimed at improving patient safety and clinical outcomes during airway emergencies. Adverse airway events are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, often linked to inconsistent communication, limited provider training, inadequate equipment access, and unclear team roles.

The program addresses these challenges through a structured, system-wide approach that includes early identification and labeling of high-risk patients, standardized airway equipment and carts, and rapid deployment of a specialized response team. Comprehensive training and education through a yearly workshop ensure that healthcare providers are equipped to manage complex airway situations effectively.
